Ask Addi — askaddi.com

Ask Addi ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights. Please read it carefully before using the service.

1. Who We Are

Ask Addi is an AI-powered informational tool designed to help California families, providers, and facilitators navigate the Self-Determination Program (SDP). It is available at askaddi.com.

2. Information We Collect

Session data

We generate an anonymous session ID stored in your browser's sessionStorage. This ID is not linked to your identity and is cleared when you close your browser tab. It is used only to group analytics events within a single session.

Conversation history

Conversations are stored in your browser's localStorage — on your device, not our servers. We never transmit or store your conversation history in our databases. Clearing your browser data removes it entirely.

Analytics

We collect anonymized usage data through Vercel Analytics and our own event tracking. This includes:

  • The type of question asked (categorized, not the full text)
  • Whether a question received an answer
  • Response time
  • Selected role (family member, provider, facilitator)
  • Language preference
  • Whether a file was uploaded (type only, not content)

This data is aggregated and used to improve the service. It is not sold or shared with third parties for marketing.

Feedback

If you use the thumbs up/down feedback buttons, we store the question text, response text, and your rating in our database (Supabase). This is used to identify where Addi needs improvement. No identifying information is attached to feedback submissions.

What we do NOT collect

  • Your name, email address, or contact information
  • UCI numbers, Social Security numbers, or Medi-Cal IDs
  • Medical diagnoses or health conditions
  • Dates of birth or other identifying personal information
  • IP addresses linked to user identities

Our system actively detects and blocks messages containing certain sensitive identifiers (like SSNs or UCI numbers) to protect your privacy.

3. Uploaded Documents

How document uploads work

When you upload a document (PDF, image, or Word file), it is transmitted over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our server, where it is passed directly to the Anthropic API to generate a response. Ask Addi does not save, log, or store the contents of uploaded documents. They exist in server memory only for the duration of the request and are discarded immediately afterward.

Anthropic API processing

Document contents are processed by Anthropic's Claude AI. Anthropic's API usage policy states that data submitted via the API is not used to train Anthropic's models. For details, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

Your responsibility when uploading

You should only upload documents that belong to you or that you have explicit permission to share. Avoid uploading documents containing the personal information of others (such as a family member's full legal name, medical records, or financial details) unless you are authorized to do so.

4. Protected Health Information (PHI)

Ask Addi is not a HIPAA-covered entity. We strongly advise against uploading documents containing protected health information or sensitive personal data beyond what is necessary to answer your question. Our system is designed to discourage the sharing of identifiable personal information in chat messages.

5. Data Retention

  • Session ID: Cleared when you close your browser tab
  • Conversation history: Stored in your browser's localStorage; you can clear it at any time from within the app
  • Analytics events: Retained for up to 24 months in aggregated, anonymized form
  • Feedback submissions: Retained indefinitely for product improvement unless you request deletion
  • Uploaded documents: Not retained — processed in memory and discarded after each response

6. Cookies and Tracking

Ask Addi uses localStorage and sessionStorage for essential functionality (conversation history, preferences, session ID). We do not use third-party advertising cookies. Vercel Analytics uses privacy-friendly, cookieless tracking.

7. Your Rights

Because we collect minimal identifying information, most traditional data rights (access, correction, deletion) apply primarily to feedback data. You may:

  • Clear your conversation history at any time using the "Clear all" option in the app sidebar
  • Request deletion of feedback submissions by contacting us
  • Stop using the service at any time — no account deletion is needed because no account was created

California residents may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). To exercise any rights, contact us at the address below.

8. Children's Privacy

Ask Addi is intended for adults (18+) or minors using the service under parental or caregiver supervision. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information to us, please contact us immediately.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of Ask Addi after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
